Our Technology

Plasco employs a patented process that efficiently recycles heat from the process to gasify the waste and then uses the unique characteristics of plasma to refine the gaseous products into a clean, consistent syngas.


Plasco Trail Road

Plasco’s Trail Road Facility (PTR) was a commercial-scale demonstration facility that converts municipal solid waste into a consistent syngas than can run reciprocating gas engines to generate electricity.

Plasco entered into a partnership with the City of Ottawa in April 2006 for the construction of PTR across from the City’s Trail Road Landfill. The facility has a small footprint (3 acres) and was built on existing landfill space.

PTR was developed and operated to test performance of each component of GPRS and ultimately to test and demonstrate performance of the full GPRS product.These performance tests were competed during 2014. PTR ceased operation following performance test ending in November 2014 .The facility was demolished in mid 2015.

Plasco Trail Road was constructed for several purposes:

  1. Demonstrate Plasco’s technology at a commercial scale
  2. Produce environmental emissions data that will accelerate permitting of commercial projects
  3. Incrementally improve the operational and environmental performance of subsystems
  4. Validate Plasco’s engineering models used for commercial designs

Between January 2008, when the facility first made electricity from processing post-recycled MSW from the City of Ottawa, and January 2015, the plant was operated in a series of focused campaigns, each intended to improve or demonstrate various unit operations. PTR demonstrated that the Plasco Conversion process could generate electricity efficiently from IC engines operating on syngas, while yielding superior environmental performance, and producing treated water and non-leachable aggregate from the waste.

The technology demonstrated at PTR was independently verified on several occasions, and finally declared ready for commercialization in mid-2014 by a reputable 3rd party engineering company. In December, 2014, the New Economy Magazine awarded Plasco the title of “The Best Recycling and Waste Management Technology”.

As the need for technology demonstration and development declined, Plasco reduced the frequency and length of its campaigns at PTR and turned to marketing its product. PTR decommissioning began in mid-2015.
